Make no mistake: if He rose at all
it was as His body;
if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the molecules
reknit, the amino acids rekindle,
the Church will fall…

It was not as the flowers,
each soft Spring recurrent;
it was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddled
eyes of the eleven apostles;
it was as His Flesh: ours.
~John Updike from “Seven Stanzas at Easter”

Our flesh is so weak, so temporary,
as ephemeral as a dew drop on a petal
yet with our earthly vision
it is all we know of ourselves
and it is what we trust knowing
of Him.

He was born as our flesh, from our flesh.
He walked and hungered and thirsted and slept
as our flesh.
He died, His flesh hanging in tatters,
blood spilling freely
breath fading
to nought
speaking Words
our ears can never forget.

And He rose again
as His flesh: ours
to walk and hunger and thirst alongside us
and here on this hill we meet together,
–flesh of His flesh–
here among us He is risen
–flesh of our flesh–
married forever
as the Church
and its fragile, flawed
and everlasting body.

  1. Eli and I had a very different Easter Sunday as our family is going through some changes…..The two of us went to Morro Bay to spend the morning at the ocean. I kept telling Eli we must leave now, we need to get over to the beach early. And as we passed the church my daughter’s go to, I felt a sadness as we weren’t spending Easter at church with them and the grandchildren.
    We got out of our car at the base of Morro Rock to the sounds of worship music…..tents and chairs set up for an outside Easter service! We arrived in time for the worship music, the soothing sounds to my broken heart, God’s word being said…..Looking at the massive Rock, hearing the gulls above and the waves crashing to our side. And all I could say was thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus…..God knew just what I needed for my brokeness and He drew me to where I needed to be. Thanks be to God! I’m so grateful for the Resurrection and the healing that is continuing in my family. To be so Loved!
