Time to Hatch

eggshell2

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird:
it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg.
We are like eggs at present.
And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg.
We must be hatched or go bad.

~C.S. Lewis
Our destiny is to fly free,
whether soaring alone
or arcing and sweeping together as one organism.
It starts in the nest, protected and warmed.
No view of sky
until shrugging off the shell,
then fed until our wings
spread beyond the edges,
readying to carry us
to places beyond imagining.

  1. ‘struggling off the shell.’

Yes, yes, Emily, that does say it all. Waiting to get the courage to ‘solo’ for the first time is scary enough.
But having to jettison that familiar protective shell and all its little pieces that we feel we need to cling to for support ‘out there,” on our own, can be traumatic. We are afraid to trust ‘the Other,’ the One who created us. He promised that he would be there to catch us if we faltered, but —you know human nature — sometimes we cling to what we believe will better help us, unaided, to make that giant leap of faith into the unknown. But it is not truly the ‘unknown’ because He has always been there, waiting for us to make the first faltering, hesitant steps toward the sureness and safety that he promises….

  2. Addendum.
I used ‘struggling’ instead of ‘shrugging,’ by mistake. Upon reflection, however, I think that,
subconsciously, I thought that ‘struggling’ would have better described my personal experiences
    of trusting and letting go..
