Preparing the Heart: Open the Door

My soul waits for the LORD more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.
Psalm 130:6

sunrise1111

Strange how one word
will so hollow you out.
But this word
has been in the wilderness
for months.
Years.

Prepare, prepare.

It may feel like
the word is leveling you,
emptying you
as it asks you
to give up
what you have known.

It is impolite
and hardly tame,
but when it falls
upon your lips
you will wonder
at the sweetness,

like honey
that finds its way
into the hunger
you had not known
was there.

As a child, it seemed to me the wait for Christmas Day took forever.  December 25 became the focal point for everything.

Now, old as I am, I’ve found the wait, the preparation itself, becomes the point.  We watch Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, Anna, Simeon, and even Herod wait.

In a community of believers, we prepare and wait together, encouraging each other through the hard times.  And there are plenty of hard times.

More significantly, Someone Else waits for us.

“I stand at the door and knock.”  Revelation 3:20

When will we be ready to end His wait and open the door to our hearts?

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.
~Christina Rossetti from “In the Bleak Midwinter”

  1. Give Him my heart? Yes, I can do that. It has always belonged to Him anyway…so little He asks of us….so much He has already given and continues to give…then – WHY? – WHY do we fear to open that door (the one that opens only from the inside) and invite Him to enter?…are we afraid that He will take from us something that we believe we need more than His Presence? His Grace? His friendship?

  2. Thank you Emily for especially adding music to your advent readings in December. So many feelings and emotions are evoked through them. God bless you richly in this ministry blog He has given you. Your blog is a daily part of my morning devotional time (favourite time of the day). I am 64, married to an amazing loyal & caring man, and a retired elementary school secretary. I struggle in my life with anxiety & depression and God has used your blog to help me immensely. Thank you.

  3. Marian,
thank you for letting me know this blog makes a difference for you — it makes such a difference to me to know it is reaching people I’ll never meet in any other way. It takes courage to face each new day when you carry anxiety and depression at your side and in every fiber of your being, but it is God who is stronger than those old tired companions of yours! He overcomes all our fears with His grace and presence. Blessings, Emily

  4. Oh dear Alice, you are asking exactly what we fear to ask — that somehow, opening the door to let Him in means we’ll be changed. Oh yes, so very changed! And we should not be afraid. love to you, Emily
