It is All That It is

The woods is shining this morning.
Red, gold and green, the leaves
lie on the ground, or fall,
or hang full of light in the air still.
Perfect in its rise and in its fall, it takes
the place it has been coming to forever.
It has not hastened here, or lagged.
See how surely it has sought itself,
its roots passing lordly through the earth.
See how without confusion it is
all that it is, and how flawless
its grace is. Running or walking, the way
is the same. Be still. Be still.
“He moves your bones, and the way is clear.”
~Wendell Berry “Grace”

If I’m confused (as I often am)
about where I’ve been, where I am, where I’m going,
I look to the cycles of the seasons to be reminded
all things (and I) come round

what is barren will bud
what buds will grow lush and fruit
what flourishes will fade and fall,
and come to rest and stillness

All things come round
making the way clear.
Grace forges a path
I need to follow.

Shining in stillness,
still shining.

  1. Excellent metaphor, Emily.
Our Creator-God and Masterful Gardener seemed to plan our spiritual ‘seasons’ as well.
Dying: Yes, we will all die at some point. Depending upon the decision that we make regarding our physical body, we know by faith that it will be
gone forever in its present form, to be replaced in His time by the form that He has chosen as we enter into our new Eternal Life with Him.. Like the Fall season, when nature changes, dies, returns to the silent darkness of earth, awaiting rebirth in the Spring when ‘all things are made new again’ and all Creation swells with the rebirth – the promises of things to come. For us, our faith assures us that that will be nothing less than Eternity with Him.

    The Spring rebirth reminds me of what happens to us – physically, spiritually, mentally. We are given a ‘second chance’ to ‘get it right,’ to use the Graces that He so lovingly bestows upon us to bud into a glorious flower as our souls become beautiful to see as He beholds them. As we waken from the often darkness and sterility that can be Fall and Winter — grief and sadness brought on by the losses, pain, and disappointments that we may have suffered in that darkness – perhaps even through the temporary human doubt about what is to come. As Peggy Lee said nearly 60 years ago in her famous musical ode to doubt and hopelessness;
    ‘IS THAT ALL THERE IS?”

We know – and believe by the gift of Faith – the answer to that question. The Resurrected Jesus, as the Christ of the Universe, in His Journey from death to life, to eternal existence, showed us the Way and answered this question 2000 years ago!

And your quote, Emily, “Grace forges a path I [we] need to follow,” IS the answer and the rallying cry for all who have doubt.
