Be a Dwelling

Be a womb.
Be a dwelling for God.
Be surprised.
~Loretta Ross-Gotta

Imagine yourself as a living house.
God comes in to rebuild that house.
At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing.
He is getting the drains right
and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on;

you knew that those jobs needed doing
and so you are not surprised.

But presently He starts
knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably

and does not seem to make any sense.
What on earth is He up to?
The explanation is that He is building
quite a different house from the one you thought of –

throwing out a new wing here,
putting on an extra floor there,
running up towers,
making courtyards.
You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage:
but He is building a palace.
He intends to come and live in it Himself.
~C.S. Lewis from Mere Christianity

Whenever there is the temptation to hunker down
in retreat from
the rest of the world,
and God Himself,
content with the status quo
and reluctant to stretch beyond
clear boundaries I’ve carefully constructed
for my one weary life~

I am surprised.

Whether bunker or cottage or palace,
when I seek safety or simplicity,
it is not enough.
I am not a dwelling for God
until His remodel project is finished~

He puts down His chisel, hammer and saw,
sees what He has salvaged from the junk heap,
looks me over
and declares it good.

  1. Sometimes we become so inured by the horrific daily events that we see and hear happening in our shrinking world — we feel the need to escape from that discouraging reality into our own private little world – that place where we find comfort and safety. Similar to the metaphor of ‘The Hound of Heaven,’ He always finds a way to bring that truth to us, reminding us perhaps that these souls are our God-created brothers and sisters who are suffering genocide, homelessness, persecution, and hatred of ‘the other.’
We acknowledge finally that we cannot but try in some way to reach out to them in compassion as we earnestly pray that He show us how we can help this human wave of suffering and desolation by trying to be one with them in spirit and by our speaking out every time that we see such suffering and injustices. Such crimes against all humanity — God’s ‘children’ —
are evident in our own country – closer than we might know, even on the street where we live….

As I was reading your words about remodeling (rehabbing), Emily, I had a fleeting picture of the Japanese art of Kintsugi, the
exquisite art of repairing broken pottery with gold. I thought of those people who try to escape knowing about the misery and devastation that shatters us every time we view what is happening in our world and want to run, shut out, avoid what we see. Is it then, when we harden our hearts (and our souls) so that our very being cracks and shatters at the reality we see. It is then, I believe, that He is able to touch us in ways that only He can. We are then ready to ‘see with the eyes and the compassionate heart of Jesus that He is able to fill our cracks and restore the broken shards with the finest gold (Graces) and thus restore us to the being that He knew we were.
